Georgia and Harry Tree Planting

On our trip day, Thursday, 28th May, we learned all about Mana Island Scientific Reserve. Later, the ranger, Sue, asked us to walk up the quad track to the top of the island. Here Sue showed us how to plant trees properly. Once bush used to cover the island. We were helping with this programme. Our class students and parents planted about 100 taupata and kohuhu trees. These trees will provide food and shelter for the native birds and insects.

Our boat, the Wildcat, and our skipper Lance are waiting patiently at the mooring while we complete our visit. You can just see the dinghy Lance uses to ferry us out from the shore. There is no wharf because rats and other animals might come ashore from boats. There are no rats, mice, dogs, cats, stoats. possums or weasels on Mana Island.
